Is one brand better than another?

Yes and no.

Well I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

The best recommendation is to do a bit of research before you choose.

The Internet is full of sites devoted to the test and comparisons of the cameras offered by each manufacturer.
Digital camera magazines are another great source. Not only for detailed product testing but also containing great articles regarding accessories and technique.
After reading all you can be sure to get a "hands on" feel for the camera at a local store that stocks the camera. The camera that you choose should fit your needs and your hands.

The DSLR cameras are the most involved as far as choosing the right camera as the consumer is also "buying" into the system that the manufacturer offers, including dedicated lenses and flash units.

Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Fuji, Panasonic and Samsung all offer capable cameras with most companies offering cameras ranging from economical compacts up to enthusiast DSLR with some of the brands offering actual professional quality DSLR's.
