The Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM

Recently I have been very interested in purchasing a good portrait lens. Something around 80mm equivalent with a very fast aperture would be nice.
I have read many good articles noting that many professional swear by the 85mm f1.2 lenses for this type of work. These lenses are the ultimate in portrait glass, but the price for them is well beyond my means.

As a 50mm lens is equal to 75mm equivalent on my DX chip sized cameras here is one option for much less money than one of the fast 85mm's..........

Sigma’s 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is high quality, professional optics and you’ll know it the minute you pick it up. In the past few years, camera manufacturers have overlooked the need for a reasonable fast prime lens that is compact enough for everyday use, yet provides the necessary image quality to meet the highest expectations. Now, with the advent of the APS-c cameras, the long popular 50mm focal length takes on double duty as a portrait length lens of approximately 90mm on most of the small chip cameras. At a fraction of the size, weight and cost of comparable lenses, this is a lens that you might have on your digital SLR at all times.

I recently picked one up. What a wonderful piece of glass. It now spends almost all of its time hanging on the front end of my Nikon d2x.
The depth of field is beyond incredible and the dream like photos that it produces are some of my best work.

If you are looking for a way to extend your creativity, you may need to look no further than this lens.
